New Year, New Directions: College Counseling and Small Group Classes Available!

I hope you have all had a great summer, and that the new school year has been a time for both you and your child to explore new opportunities. Here at H-bar Tutoring, we have several new services we are now offering: college counseling for high schoolers and small group enrichment classes for elementary schoolers.

Firstly, our college counseling service brings to bear a combination of experience and excellence that can't be found elsewhere in LA, if in California. Our new service will be offered by counselors with experience both in administration and admissions at schools such as Caltech, MIT, UCLA, UC-Berkeley, Princeton, and Yale. Our college counselors also have several years of experience on the National Association of College and Academic Counselors list-serve (where many counselors and college admissions staffers share information and ask questions). We know what it takes to get into college, and will be more than happy to help you and your child develop and execute a college preparation process designed to maximize their potential. For existing tutoring clients (i.e. you!), we are offering our premium college counseling services at $200 per hour, and as with our tutoring, if you're not satisfied with our expertise in your first session, you don't owe us a dime.

Secondly, we have a few small fall enrichment classes we'd like you all to know about, particularly aimed at 1st-5th graders. All classes run from October 11 to November 21 and include 10 hours of instruction. The cost of a single class is $300, while the cost for both is $550, a significant (>60%) discount to our one-on-one rates. This is part of a joint venture with the nonprofit Institute for Educational Advancement, which is being led by our Curriculum Coordinator Dr. Rosemary Rohde. The classes will be held at the IEA campus, which is centrally located in South Pasadena.

The first class, Art of Science, includes breathtaking (and real) scientific visualizations and explore ways in which artistic representation guides our scientific experiment. Students learn about advanced topics such as atomic structure, cells, and cosmology, developing familiarity with these subjects in the same way scientists do: by looking at pictures and telling stories! This class is available from 3-4:30 on Tuesdays and 1:30-3 on Saturdays

The second class, Introduction to Neuroelectricity, introduces your scholar to the fascinating details of how the brain works. It comprises a short introduction to electricity and the brain, and then focuses on how they interact answering diverse questions such as: What is the brain made out of? How does it use electrical energy to think and remember? What are the basic parts of the brain, and how do they interact?

While these courses represent rather more of a challenge than usual for elementary-age students, we hope that they will help inspire the next generation to be more engaged with science and to understand themselves and their world better.
